How to Pay for Assisted Living

In our previous blog post, we gave an introduction to what assisted living care is, defining the industry in general and the specific regulations enforced by the state of Maryland. Now that you hopefully have an understanding of the assisted living industry, we want to follow that up by providing some education on how much you can expect to pay for these services, and your different options for payment.

According to a 2015 survey referenced by assistedlivingfacilities.org, the national average cost of a private assisted living unit is $3,600 per month; while the average cost in the state of Maryland is $3,900 per month. It should be noted that these figures represent the base cost for the unit, and do not include additional fees for supplemental services and amenities.

Before we get into options to pay for assisted living care, we want to establish that, generally speaking, Medicare and private health insurance will not provide financial assistance for it. Obviously, people, either the potential resident or his/her loved ones, would see this average expected base cost and have concern about how to make the payment. With that being said, there are some options.

For individuals with limited financial resources, the state of Maryland does offer the Medicaid Home and Community-Based Options Waiver, which will cover the cost of residency in a facility. Also, residents in smaller facilities (4-16 beds) can receive assistance in the amount of $650 per month from the Senior Assisted Living Group Home Subsidy Program. Both of these assistance programs currently have waitlists.

For those who don’t qualify for financial assistance, there are other options. If you are young and healthy enough, you may be able to secure a long-term care insurance policy, which will pay for assisted living care. Also, reverse mortgages enable you to convert the equity in your home into cash in order to pay for your care. Many senior-aged individuals also sell their previous residence in order to cover their health care costs. A final option is to aggregate the private contributions of family members in order to take care of the person in need.

We understand that finding a comfortable assisted living facility, and subsequently securing the necessary funding to reside there, can be a daunting task. For that reason, we are proud to state that the fees established at Holistically Devoted Assisted Living (HDAL) are very competitively priced. Furthermore, we won’t nickel and dime you for additional-provided services. All of our services and amenities are included in your stated residency rate. We hope you will schedule a tour with us today to see all we have to offer!

Respectfully,
